Our History: Serving the Community for Over a Century
The Parish Church of St Mary, Charleswood began as a Mission on September 19, 1914. The new congregation consisted mainly of cottage owners and farmers in the new rural municipality. The first services were held in private homes and then at Chapman School.
It was soon decided that St Mary should have a home of its own. The land at the corner of Roblin Boulevard and Haney Street was donated by the then Reeve, George Chapman Sr. Construction began in 1922, and when finished, the little frame church could hold 125 people. |
A New Beginning
After the Second World War, the Department of Veterans’ Affairs procured a large area of land in Charleswood to create housing for returning veterans, in an area called Roblin Park. Along with the veterans, a considerable number of families moved into the area, very quickly expanding the congregation’s size.
A new church building was constructed and dedicated in 1957, with the original church building then becoming the parish hall. In 1977, renovations to the main body of the church and construction of a new parish hall were completed, with further renovations undertaken in the 1990’s. Our building incorporates some historic pieces such as the marble pulpit and stained glass windows from Christ Church.

Community and Tradition
While activities may vary over time, at the core of St Mary is the value of being part of a larger community. Gathering together, in work and play, to enjoy and support one another while building community and serving others. Our Friendship Group organizes the spring and fall rummage sales. In our worship, we have a history of adapting new forms of music to enrich our spiritual life together. We have a tradition of supporting those in need, through our food bank and volunteer support of St Matthew’s-Maryland Community Ministry .
Our history is a reminder of the faith, commitment, talents and hard work of our members and clergy. We are proud to be part of the history of the community of Charleswood and the Diocese of Rupert’s Land. We are grateful for the many blessings God has given us over the years, and live in faith and hope for the future.
